Windows Vista Print Spooler Error

For several weeks now, I’ve not been able to print anything from my desktop computer.  I have a Dell XPS 435T with Windows Vista 64bit and all of the sudden one day printing stopped working.  I kept getting an error like this:

“spooler subsystem app stopped working”

I  do not recall doing anything out of the ordinary, but I could not print to my printer, print to a PDF, or do anything with the printers.  When I would open my printer folders it would be blank and I would get the same print spooler error.  I tried all of the normal checks, and could not get rid of this error or get my ability to print back.  This was so annoying.

This week, after continuing to research the issue, I came across some posts that said you should check for files in your printer spool folder (located here: C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS)  and try to remove them if they are there.  So I figured, what the heck, I can’t be any worse off.  I go check this folder, and sure enough there are two files there.  I try to delete them and it requires admin. privilege to do so.  I grant such authority and the files are now gone.  So I try to print and still no luck, so I figure a reboot might now be in order.

I reboot my computer, and go to my printers folder and voila! My printers are now all listed and it looks like everything is back to normal.  So I test out printing to my printer, and printing to a PDF and everything works again!  Dang Windows!  Not sure who is the cause of this (some seem to indicate something with Adobe), but this was certainly a very irritating issue for me that just should not have happened.

In any case I wanted to post this in case someone else spends hours trying to figure out why their print capability is screwed up.  I’ve read this also can happen on Windows 7.  I have not upgraded to Win. 7, yet, but considering it.

Back to Blogging: Shuttle Launch and Dallas Remake

It’s been a while since I’ve blogged here on my personal blog.  Thought I would take some time to spark a few posts and see what happens.  I’ve been busy working on many personal projects, quite involved at my church, and working very hard at my day job with Volvo.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately, and I like the idea of picking some newsworthy or odd news topics of the day and discussing them from my viewpoint.  So here goes my first attempt…

Final Shuttle Launch

Final Launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis

One of the first big news topics of the day was the final space shuttle launch.  I just happened to be off work today and was at home which made it very convenient for me to watch Atlantis lift off into the sky.  The whole space program has always fascinated me to some degree and I’ve always following the launches from time-to-time especially when I was younger.

I remember very clearly the morning that I was watching the Challenger lift-off that ended in the horrific explosion.  It was a January morning and for some reason I was not in school that day.  My parents and were fixing to leave to go shopping out of town or something, but seeing that will always be in my mind.

It will be interesting to see where the space program goes from here.  I know the shift is that everything will move to the private industry.  I can only hope that we achieve things as great as the space shuttle program has over its lifetime.

You can watch the final shuttle mission live here.

80’s Drama Dallas Coming Back?

Cast of Dallas Remake Coming 2012I was on Facebook today and happen to see an ad about this so I just had to click it.  I normally don’t click those Facebook ads that always show up on the right-hand side of the page, but with this one I just had to see for myself.

Apparently it’s true.  TNT has apparently decided to purchase 10 episodes of a new remake of the drama Dallas and it even has three or the original cast members.  I was like “Wow…can this really make a go?”.  It’s scheduled to air in 2012 so I guess that leaves plenty of time for things to change, but it will be interesting to see how well it goes.

I was never into the show much, but when I was a kid most Friday nights I was at my grandparents house and we would always watch the Dukes of Hazzard which aired right before Dallas would come on.  The Dukes of Hazzard was  one of my favorite shows as a kid and I always remember Dallas coming on after it, so I did see it from time-to-time and always remember the phrase “Who Shot J.R.?”.

It seems that trying to remake old shows does not always work.  I know they brought back a remake of Knight Rider a couple of years back and that one didn’t fly very well. Knight Rider was also one of my favorite shows as a kid.  Guess I had a thing for unique cars and didn’t realize it.

I think good things should just be left alone.  A show lived its life and trying to revive it again will probably just hurt more than it will help.  My suggestion is to just promote the DVD set (if available) to the younger generation so that they can experience what we did as kids.  Okay…enough about TV for now.

With that I’ll say so long for now!

Pray For My Niece

Photobucket

My fourth niece was born this past July with basically a half of heart. Her name is Annabelle and she has been in the hospital since birth. She has had two surgeries so far and is still using a ventilator. This has been very difficult on my brother and his wife so I would ask for your prayers for baby Annabelle.

Annoying Problem With USB Card Reader in Dell XPS 435T Solved

Ok, so I have a Dell XPS 435T desktop system. It has a Realtek USB 2.0 Card Reader in it that has been working fine over the year.  I normally keep is disabled because there is a bug with my video editing software such that if the card reader is enabled my system will crash with a BSOD (blue screen of death) when I try to write to a DVD.  Anyway, I recently used the card reader to import some photos from my memory card and everything was fine until today.

Today I put in my memory card and nothing happened.  No drives showed up, nothing.  So I disabled/enabled and nothing.  I didn’t know what was wrong as it had worked fine just a few days ago.  So I started Googling for answers and found updated drives which I installed and all I kept getting was one of two things.  If I let Microsoft take care of it it would install the drivers for “unknown USB device”.  If I forced it to install the Realtek drivers then it would say “device could not start”.  I did this multiple times with the same results.  Still no card reader working.

So after about 2 – 3 hours of dealing with the crazy thing I found an obsecure post (located here) that said the issue was you need to disconnect the computer from the power.  Even if you turn this computer off the motherboard still gets power noted by the green light on the back that stays lit.  So I unplug the computer from the outlet, let the green light go out, and wait a couple of minutes.  I then power up the machine, let it boot up, and viola, my Realtek USB 2.0 card reader was now working just as it always did.

I’m like…what the crap?  I spent 2 – 3 hours on something that took 5 minutes to fix.  This is just insane.  Of course I’ve been using computers long enough to know that this is usually how it goes.

I wanted to share this in case someone else runs across the same issue.  Just try unplugging the computer first and it may say you a lot of headaches and time later.

By the way. I’m running Windows Vista 64bit but I’ve read of people having the same issues with Windows 7.  I still have yet to upgrade to Windows 7 but would like to one of these days.

Catch ya later!

My First Post of 2010

So it’s like April already and I have yet to make a post to this blog until now, April 16.  We are already into the second quarter of the year and I can hardly believe it’s already 2010.  There have been lots of things happening this year and maybe I will take the time to share some of those soon.  The most recent thing to happen was that some of our friends got married.  I’m working on their wedding video:

Congratulations Josh and Laura!  I wish you a long and happy life together.

Thanks for taking time to read my blog.  I  hope you have a blessed day!
